According to the Federal Trade Commission, there has been a massive increase in digital thefts since 2021. Recently, a massive investment scam has hit the world named Digital smoke.
FTC is raising awareness in the common public about such scams to the maximum, but still, some people are found to be successful victims.
How did Digital Smoke scam people?
Digital Smoke has defrauded users from the US, the UAE, the U.K, the EU, China, India, Colombia, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Canada, Australia, and Singapore.
- The threat actors impersonated Fortune 100 organizations from the UK and the US. They disguised themselves as Baxter Medical, ABRDN, Lloyds Bank, and Eaton Corporation.
- Most of the fraudulent schemes pertained to financial services, EV and EV batteries, oil & gas, renewable energy, healthcare, and semiconductors. Internationally renowned investment corporations and funds with a global footprint are also used for the purpose.
According to Resecurity, the identifiers of these groups: “The name was chosen because of their sophisticated tactics used to entice victims hankering to earn good money online – the bad actors used the traditional HYIP approach: The victim is asked to deposit money with the option to withdraw their funds anytime, mechanisms used by investment bankers and financial advisors to help make the victim feel comfortable investing in perspective markets and fixed income products. The group has also successfully combined ‘investment scam’ and ‘investment fraud’ models leveraging several scenarios to defraud victims.”
Prodigy of attacks
A digital smoke investment scam is a type of investment scam where fraudsters use digital platforms such as websites, social media, or email to lure investors into fake investment opportunities.
The scam often involves promising high returns on investment with little or no risk, using false information and testimonials to create the illusion of legitimacy.
The fraudsters may ask for personal information or money upfront, claiming it’s necessary for the investment process which is in Fortune 100 companies.. They may also pressure the victims to invest quickly before the opportunity is gone, or create a sense of urgency by warning of a pending financial crisis.
In December 2022, over 350+ hosts were identified, with thousands of domains used for cloaking, hidden redirects, and payment gateway protection.
Different modes of payments with a limited period of 2-3 days were set to lure them for better credibility. Cryptocurrency, bank transfer, and many other forms were accepted.
Resecurity says: “The information about Digital Smoke along with identities of key actors has been timely shared with the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Center and the U.S. Law Enforcement in Q4 2022 which disrupted at the beginning of 2023.”
