Microsoft unveils GPT-4 security assistant tool powered by AI for defenders’ safety

On Tuesday, Microsoft launched Security Copilot in a limited preview, as part of its ongoing efforts to integrate AI-based features to provide comprehensive defense at machine pace and size. 

Using OpenAI’s GPT-4 generative AI and its proprietary security-specific model, the tool acts as a security analysis tool, allowing cybersecurity analysts to promptly react to threats, evaluate risk exposure and process signals.

By aggregating data and insights from different products like Defender, Microsoft Sentinel, and Intune, it assists security teams in gaining a better understanding of their environment, determining their susceptibility to known vulnerabilities and exploits, recognizing ongoing attacks, assessing their magnitude, and obtaining remediation instructions, as well as summarizing incidents.

Key features of Co-pilot

• Threat detection: Users can ask Security Copilot about suspicious user logins over a specific period and use it to create a PowerPoint presentation outlining an incident and its attack chain.

• Risk assessment: The tool can accept files, URLs, and code snippets for analysis. Microsoft’s proprietary security-specific model, which informs Security Copilot, is privacy-compliant, and customer data is not used to train the foundational AI models.

• Incident response: in the event of an incident, it can quickly respond to the situation and provide remediation instructions.

The adaptability of security Co-pilot

Security Copilot is the latest AI initiative from Microsoft, which has been integrating generative AI features into its software offerings over the past two months, including Bing, Edge browser, GitHub, LinkedIn, and Skype.

Microsoft 365 Copilot, which integrates AI capabilities within its suite of productivity and enterprise apps such as Office, Outlook, and Teams, was launched a few weeks ago.
