The UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) has recently announced a unique approach in its fight against cybercrime. In collaboration with the US, the Netherlands, Germany, Poland, and Europol, they have launched “Operation PowerOFF” to dismantle criminal DDoS-for-hire infrastructures worldwide.
“All of the NCA-run sites, which have so far been accessed by around several thousand people, have been created to look like they offer the tools and services that enable cybercriminals to execute these attacks.”
As part of this initiative, the NCA has set up a network of fake DDoS-for-hire websites to infiltrate the online criminal underground. The operation aims to catch cybercriminals red-handed, and it marks a significant step in the fight against cybercrime.
From plan to progress
- Inexpensive and user-friendly cybercrime services have enabled anyone to commit cyber offenses with ease, according to the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA).
“Their ease of access means these tools and services have made it easier for people with low-level cyber skills to commit offenses,” the NCA noted back in December 2022.
- The NCA has created fake booter services that mimic genuine DDoS services, with several thousands of people accessing them.
- Instead of providing access to DDoS tools, these fake services were designed to gather information on those who wanted to use them.
- After successfully accessing the cybercrime market and collecting information, the NCA revealed the operation by displaying a splash page on one of its fake sites.
- The NCA warns that fake law enforcement-operated booter sites are still being used to gather information on cyber criminals.
- The splash page on the fake DDoS booter site informs users that their data has been collected, and law enforcement authorities will soon contact them.
- The NCA plans to run more services like this site to curb cybercrime, and the ongoing “Operation PowerOFF” has already resulted in numerous arrests.
“Booter services are a key enabler of cyber-crime,” Alan Merrett, a member of the NCA’s National Cyber Crime Unit, said.
The operation continues to hold cybercriminals accountable for their actions.
Concluding thought
This is not the first time that cyber security agencies have caught such criminal minds. They have caught many cyber criminals through such operations and have become successful.
Here, we should understand how important it is to stay aware of what’s happening in the digital world. DDoS can be damaging to you and your business so it is better to be preventive.
